need input concerning Bobcat 864 - are the deutz oil cooled engines reliable? Hows the bobcat 864/T250 compare to a cat 257?

Dealer brought me a much larger, foot controlled T250 to demo rather than the 864. Seems to have plenty of muscle to clear fence-row sprouts and underbrush and easily fills the bucket with our heavy clay soil. I've put a couple of hours on it and noticed it has a "hop" to it when backing up. Also, bucket tilt speed is OK but drop speed seems awful fast. Any feedback and inspection tips on this machine will be appreciated. Machine will be used only on the farm for mostly clearing and pond finishing.

I was thinking the T250 was the next generation of the 864, didn't know it was a bigger machine. But anyway a tracked skid-steer is amazing in the amount of stuff it can do in a short amount of time. I'm not sure I know what your describing as a hop are you backing up with a full bucket? They tend to tip-toe more with a full bucket. But a track machine is more stable than a wheeled version at this. Some of the Bobcats used to use a flow speed reduction apparatus at the control valve to combat fast drop speeds, we called it a barstool which is what it looked like a minature version of course. It was about an inch tall with 3 "legs" and a "seat", it just sat in one of the fittings at the control valve to slow the flow, evidently they dont use them anymore. Been a few years since I was "in the loop" with Bobcats, I left just as the T and S prefix machines were coming out. There is a bunch of electronics on these newer Bobcats, more than what has to be in my opinion but I'm kind of a simple guy anyway.

I believe you are exactly right. Now that I think about it, the "Bobcat Hop" (hey, kinda' catchy) occurred when going up-grade in reverse or with some weight in the bucket in reverse. I raised a concern about all the electronic gadgets on the machine, too. Just plain turning a key or looking at analog gauges would work for me. I'll look for the barstool. As far as the 864/T250 size comparison - I sometimes have a tendency to look over the top of my bi-focals.

if your going to buy a tracked machine i`d buy the cat, i`ve run both bobcat and cat tracked machines and I`d never run anything but a cat from now on, better hyd. system, track system, all around a nicer machine and tracks are easier on the grass then tires, we have a 257b that was bought new and has about 1100 hrs now and love it

The Deutz engines are fine, they do have a timing BELT that needs to be changed according to schedule. Gets nasty when they break. The engines will pop a head gasket ever once in a while. Have no comparison facts vs. the Cat

I have a 864 that has about 1800 hours on it. Is a great machine. Only problem I've ever had with engine was had to replace fuel return lines as they got brittle and started to leak. No big deal did it myself and cost about 3 bucks. We use it allmost every day and have no problems. I have two other Deutz engines and have no problems with them either. Only thing is don't let them run lean or they run hot.

The machine I'm looking at has 3000 hours on it. Being oil-cooled plus turbocharged and all wasn't sure about uneven engine temps and shutdowns.
