I've got to split a set of tracks on my case 450. I"ve located the pin and heated and hammered like hell. Broke the drift pin and brused the crap out of my legs. How hot do I have to get the chain and how hard do I have to hammer? My womans not thrilled to hold the punch as I swing with both hands. I'm not a small guy but this really seems like one mother!!
I know the dealers use hydraulic portable presses but are unwilling to rent out. Has anyone used any automotive pullers or pressers? Are we talking cherry red rosebud kind of heat? One set of tracks is off the machine and not on very firm footing (wish it were on concrete)This makes hammering like wizzing in the wind. Thanks Keith

If your time & effort are worth anything, here's the easiest way to split the track, but you'll need a new master pin ( about $22 for a 450 ):The master pin has an indent on the outside, put it in the sprocket between 2 teeth to help hold it. Take off the shoes on either side.
With a torch, burn a hole (plunge) in the center of each side of the master pin, plunge it in about 1" or so taking care to keep it straight so you don't burn out the side and into the rail. The hole should end up being about 3/8 " wide. This will relieve the pressure from the rail and drive out ( from the outside in) with very few whacks. For a drift holder you should make a handle like the other post said, but use a short piece of hose at the tee to take the shock out of the handle.
To install the new pin, put it in a cooler with dry ice overnight, a freezer isn't cold enough, that will shrink it down .002 or so and make all the difference driving it back ( from the inside out).
I've driven out Case track pins many times and found it's worth every penny to just buy a new pin and sacrifice the old one rather than your back.

Are you sure you got the master pin. if so check to see if someone welded it on the other side. Or if when the pin was drove in that they didnt swell up the end by hitting it direct on the pin. Also if you make a pin knocker your wife would be happer. Just weld a long handle on to the drift pin. Also they drive out better if you have the pin on the sprocket you get a more solid hit make sure the track pad is still bolted to link or when the pin starts moving it will only move on one side and will spread the link and bind up. Finally if this dont work heat the link cherry red and drive pin out let cool on its own.
