HD7 High Idle Problem

My HD7 Detroit Diesel runs great but every once in a while after I throttle down it goes to an extremely high idle on its own. Throttle has no effect neither does the fuel shutoff. After about 30 seconds it idles back down. Changed all fuel filters but no luck. Is this a governor problem or what? Thanks in advance.

Andy, you might check the airbox drains on your 3-71, these are one quarter inch tubes that are about 3-4 inches long and can be found on the corners of the block a few inches above the pan rail. usually there are only two of them.If they are plugged they can cause overspeed due to running on the oil in the air box. The 2 cycle Detroit does not use an injection pump but has unit injectors, the only pump you have is the fuel transfer pump which should put about 65-70 lbs. of fuel pressure to the inlet side of the head. A plugged return line can cause excessive fuel pressure which usually causes the engine to roll, A sticky rack in an injector can cause an over speed but this also will usually cause the engine to hunt or roll and some times will cause a run away condition which you then have to shut it down with the emergency air shut off. If I remember correctly this is incorperated in the gov. shut down linkage on the AC application. Hopes this helps,Al

Can't tell u how to fix it, but it sounds like the rack in the injector pump is sticking.

Someone told me a long time ago about certain Detroits that would take off if an oil drain line was plugged. They would suck in the engine oil and run on that.
