HD7 Engine replacement

How tough a job is it to replace the engine in an HD7W? I locked up the engine in mine, I think because of low oil pressure, and need to pull the engine, look it over and may just find a replacement. My question is, does this involve tearing the machine completely down? Or can it be done by pulling the sheet metal off the front and unbolting the engine? Any help would be appreciated. This is a great old crawler and I don't want to see it sit still too long.

Chad, You might take A look at the cylinders in that 3-71, it may have scored a piston and seized up a cylinder, this is a common result from low oil pressure, pull the air box covers off and look into the liners through the air ports, you can soon tell the condition of the cylinders this way. It could save you from pulling the engine.Al

Hello- Most engines can be pulled to the front, involves removal of sheet metal-radiator-exhaust sys.-etc. Finding a replacement can be a big problem. I am searching for a set of used rails for what I believe is a 1955 AC crawler- about the same size as a Cat D4 or D6. It has no ID plate or Model plate. Is equipped with a 3-cyl GMC diesel and a manual trans. Any info or links would help...Thanks Andy

Back to your question. I saw a post on one of the boards that said they had used Case 650 tracks on their HD-7. If you find any tracks, please post the information.

Good Luck,
Lee

Lee, I used a set of pins and bushings for a Case

in my HD-7. The pins were about a half inch short.

I split the difference on each side. A little welding on each end of pin with rod for dissimilar metal. Been holding for about 10 years. A couple of welding passes on each link to build up the wear surface.

It's been my experience that all the "good used" parts are about gone for these. I'd welcome any ideas where to find stuff for them.

Hi Andy,

To my knowledge the only crawler AC installed a 3 cylinder GM/Detroit in was the HD-7s. The 7s were built from 1940 to 1950 but may have been sold after the production run or someone has repowered a HD-5 or HD-6. Easiest way to tell them apart is that the HD-7s have a solid bellhousing from the engine to the transmission and the HD-5/6s have a driveline with two u-joints between the clutch housing and the transmission. There are other design differences but that one is easy to see.

Good Luck,
Lee

Hi Lee- Sorry it took me so long to get back. That is good info, I will check it out. I talked with some Cat guys from Mesa about the tracks and they said to spec it out and get with aftermarket dealers to see what they could do. I emailed one salvage outfit and they said the pin/ pin centers sounded like a HD6. What are your centers on? This tractor has them at 6-1/2".The dozer is 400 miles away so I cant just run outside and check things. Thanks Andy

The government got rid of a bunch of 3-53 engines awhile back. One of those would bolt right in. There were guys selling them for about $800. Low hour units.

Pretty straight forward job. Start from the front end and work your way back. Bumper, grill, radiator, etc. The only tricky part is you have to unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel before you remove the engine.

Good Luck,
Lee Bradley
