Since I found this forum, I'll ask another crawler question. I'm gonna go look at an "unknown" A-C crawler, and want to know how to ID the unit quickly. Engine size? number plate? Where, how? HELP!! Thanks for reply.

Andy, I don't have my AC book handy but I think your machine is an HD-7 because it has the 3 cylinder diesel which is probably a detroit.I'll check my book when I find it and give you another reply.

You have a 3-71 Detroit Diesel for power which parts are readly available. For inspection, pull the blower covers on the opposite side of the engine from the blower and check the air box for accumalation of sludge/oil and ensure that the air box drains are clear (run the engine and feel the air blowing out of the drain line). Rotate the engine with the covers blower covers off after running and check the piston skirts and ring condition incuding the top of the piston for excessive carbon and scouring of the piston skirts. Place a screwdriver against the compression rings when they are down at the air intake ports and see if there is spring back and also check to see if any of the tell tail grove is still left on the rings.( This is A grove that runs around the middle or the ring. All of this will tell you the condition of the Engine.
