I am looking to buy a small dozer in the $15,000 category. I know nothing about them, but I think I'm in the right place for some advice! I just bought some acreage and I am a devoted do-it yourselfer. I have a compact 4WD tractor with a loader and backhoe, but I need something much bigger to change the landscape the way I have in mind (maybe even put in a pond). The price of excavation work today, I figure I can buy the dozer, do the work, and then sell it at a loss if I want and still come out ahead. Anyway.... I have looked at some Komatsu D20's in this price range, they look good. I have also come across some "gray market dozers" that were meant to be sold in Japan only that have found their way here. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. dj

I bought a grey market Komatsu D-21 crawler loader several years ago. I have used it to clean up and dig some ponds on 20 acresof land that had been clear cut. I thought that by getting the loader instead of just a blade I could use it for more things. Haven't had any problems with it all. I did have to hunt hard for an operation and maintenance manual but once I did there has been no problem getting filters or parts from the local dealer. I'm in the Puget Sound region of Washington. In fact I'm probably getting ready to sell mine this summer. Will be asking around $6500. If you have any more questions you can e-mail me.

Iffen you don't wear it out or tear it up too bad, a Cat will hold it's value!

If at all possible stay with Cat, John Deere, or Case. In that order.

Komatsu dozers are great units that hold there value. No problems with parts from your local dealer. They hold there value and are great work horses. We have several D20 & D31's we use and they have been great dependable units.

Buy a Cat and get a traxcavator. Get the biggest one that you can afford. Buy it with a trial run at your place and have someone there that knows how to operate it. Watch how easily it cranks when cold. It should not require ether if the temp is above 45 degrees and should start readily. Run it hard for a couple of hours. Check the oil pressure and temp to verify that everything is normal. Put the bucket against something that you know that it cannot push or lift (big tree). Watch both tracks, to verify that both are trying are spinning, while attempting to raise the bucket. If they are not send it back to where it came from. Look for leaks. Minor weeping is permissible in an older machine.
