I picked up a small crawler the other day. It's about the size of a D-2. The only ID plate I find says, Manfactured by The Best Gas Traction Co. San Leandro,California. Licensed under United States Patents of The Holt Manfacturing Company USA. About 30 patent dates starting 12/17/07 to 7/10/17 It looks like a early Chev.OHV 6 not a 235 the one before it (216?) and what looks like a 3sp with the reverse lock lever on the shifter (old Chev). The tracks are about 6.5ft.oal. 28in tall,45in wide. Has a homemade 6ft hyd blade with some sort of old car pump running it. If any one has any info. about this tractor or BEST/HOLT CO. please get ahold of me. I also have a RD-2, RD-4 and a 7-3T You might say I'm in to old iron thanks for any help (and ideas too) Andy E-mail aftruck@cncnet.com

Hi again - If you are a real fan of Holt, etc, you may be interested in a scan I have from a 1918 book called "the modern gas tractor" It's a labelled schematic of the old track-and-wheel Holt Caterpillar. E-mail me direct, and I'll send you a copy. It's in 2 parts, but can be printed and put together. The Cat owners club was glad to get a copy, so am offering them to all fans. Free, of course !Just double-click on my name at top.

Hi Andy, welcome to Insanity Central. Someone asked the other day if he was crazy to want to restore a crawler, but that's like asking the inmates of the asylum if you're crazy. Anyway, if you go to the first page on this site where "search article archives" is, put in "holt caterpillar", search on this board, and it will come up with 2 postings. One of them is from a few months ago that I posted to the same question regarding the company history. Hope this helps, Ron. - let me know if you can't find it.

I had a holt 5 ton,gas vintage 1924 or earlyer,it had holt in big block letters down the side of rad and caterpillar in wavy writing across the front.i live in penticton b.c. canada and summerland is a small town north of hear.i was told many years ago that the crawler tractor was invented in summerland and the inventor went to the holt people and talked them into building the tractor, the rest is history.if this could be confermed i would like to know. thanks guys--- bruce
