I'm useing a Cat 931B that belongs to a freind. This is the first time I have ever run this machine and there seems to be a problem with the tranny. It seems like it isn't getting all the power to the tracks. It moves kind of ok in first. In second it moves slow, and in third it won't hardly move. I was wondering if the filter for the transmision could be plugged? I don't think this machine has been serviced for a long time. Where would a person find the filter on this machine? Is the Hydraulic oil the same for the transmition? I would ask the owner these questions, but he is a long distance truck driver and is hard to reach. The last crawler I run was a HD5,and HD15 Allis. They were a lot simpler to figure out.

I had a 941 some years ago and it used the same oil in everything except the finals. Motor transmission and hydraulics. Mine was sluggish when you first started using it and got stronger as it warmed. Can't remember about the transmission filter though. Mine used Chevron 30 oil.

The trans filter should be near the top of the trans I think on the right side pull up the floor plates and you should see a cast housing with 5 or six bolts holding it. But it sounds like the torque convertor going out. Does the trans temp. run hot.

The trans. temp doesn't run hot. It just acts like it isn't getting enough fluid flow. I clooked at the hour meter today and it has just a little over 4000 hours on it. I wouldn't think that it would be wore out yet.

It might be worth changing the fluid and filter. Look inside battery box door and see what your models oil requirements are.

Hello- to430 (30 wt) Chevron is the right fluid. The trans has a suction screen on the back of it under a small 4" x4" cover, uses 3/8 bolts. Should also have a seperate trans control filter in a round 6" dia x 11" long metal housing. You may be running low pressure at either your torque convertor pump or trans pump. Check and change the screens and filters first. check the loaded engine running rpm to make sure your not suffering plugged fuel filters or air filters next. If that doesnt reveal the problem, you better contact your local Cat dealer. Diagnosing Torque convertor- trans pressures requires 3-4 special gauges and hoses. Andymz
