Recently bought a 39H with a knock in the engine. Got it home after driving her for about 5 miles. you can learn alot after being on one this long. Blew 1 front tire and she smoked like a freight train but she ran good except for the knock. I bought this tractor for 825.00 decent rubber (on the rear) good sheet metal. But the main reason I got it was for the original seat for the sunken deck on my 40H. Anyhow afer getting it home I drained the oil and did a finger sweep in the pan. Bad move! Pieces parts in the bottom. Took the pan off for closer inspection and found that three pistons had the tabs knocked off of one side each. How could this have happened any ideas? Also is this seat worth as much money as the parts guys say 500.00? Sold the tractor as a fixer upper but kept the seat. Just wondered if anyone has had this experience. Thanks for the input!

Not sure what the 39 seat is worth, but I do know that they are rare. I have 2 39's - one with the original seat and the other is one that I made. When I bought the 2nd someone had chasnged the seat. Just finished restoring the 2nd. Link below will show tractor and seat.

I have an early 1940 H and it has the 1939 style seat. Evidently they hadn't changed the seat style until late 1940 or somebody on the line found a left over and wanted to get rid of it .

the tabs in the bottom of your oil pan are from the piston pin bushings wearing out, mine had 8 skirts laying in the pan when i disassembled it. if you would have taken apart the engine and held the pistons in a vice the problem would have been quite apparent when you moved the rod.
