I have the subject tractor on my farm. Recently after brush-hogging (big brush) with a high engine speed, and very slow ground speed; I started to the barn and moved the speed selector to a faster speed (still in low range) and the tractor stopped pulling, as if in neutral. I returned the speed selector to 1/3 range and the tractor began to move. In both high and low range, the speed selector works from the neutral position to about 1/2 it's position. Reverse seems fine. Any suggestions for a solution?

If your going to work on a hydro yourself, I'd suggest you not do it. There are a lot of test guages and an isolation valve that you need for properly diagnosing a hydro.

Hi Bill, without looking at the parts/orperators manual, I bet they have a high pressure relief valve to keep the operator from tearing the hydro up when you exceed the capicity of the machine. The higher the rpm the more pressure that it makes and the hydro can't take the torque without doing some damage. So it acts like a governor of sorts. Had you switched from low range to high range then it would of ran just fine.

I'm just guessing here as I've never worked or orperated a 656. I would atleast call a IH dealer to check out my therory tho.

Might not be the problem, but I would change the filters, and maybe if it appears dirty the hy-tran too. Or it could be the oil got too hot, does it do it when it is cold? check and make sure the Hyd oil cooler is not plugged up.

I agree with Mudcat, and you might have cooked the oil. I know changing all that oil isnt cheep but its a lot cheaper than repairs!
