Anybody remember the aftermarket toilet paper oil filter conversions that used to be available through J.C. Whitney and other suppliers? Everybody swore by them for replacements in old car engines, tractors, etc. Then they disappeared -- and a lot of conspiracy stories made the rounds that Fram, Purolator, or some other filter supplier bought them up to get rid of the competition. Are these still around? Anybody have any negative stories about them?

I remember seeing those years ago. I think there were companies such as Franz and others that made them. Several years ago I read some writings by some so-called experts that were critical of this type of filter for 3 reasons. One, that they filtered so well they filtered out many oil additives that were good for engines, two, that engine rebuilders were finding traces of toliet paper throughout the engines, and three, they did not use the cold start bypass system in some engines to prevent oil starvation in cold weather or a clogged filter. I don't know if these are fair assessments but just something I read and it should get a discussion going!

The rolled paper filters sold today are called by-pass filters. They only take a fraction of the pumped oil. Most of it goes through the OEM filter. Some claim that the oil creates channels between the layers and filtration is minimal. Others claim that diesel motor oil will clean-up to like-new-out-of-the-can condition.

Of course the old Farmall OEM filters are bypass oil filters too.

They are still made. Some models will hold up to 2 Bounty paper towels. There have been a number of posts over at www.ford-diesel.com on the subject. Go to the forum section and do a search.
