WHAT TO BUY C OR H

I can't put my finger on my Farmall book at the moment.

I'm helping my neighbor buy a tractor and we have a choice between a Farmall "C" or an "H".

The H is a 1940 with no hydraulics but runs good.

The C is a 1948 an also runs good.

Both have decent rear rubber.

Both have been repainted but not restored.

These people have about 5 acres and want to use this for snow removal, cleaning out horse corrals, light yard work.

I've never used a C, always had M's or H's so I'm not all familiar with what a C can do.

Can you put a front end loader on a C and actually do anything? And are there front end loaders made for them?

Also, could someone quickly post the horsepower rating for the H and C.

Think we can pick up the C for around $1600 and the H for $1100.00

Would appreciate any input.

I have a C and a Super C. Great tractors. They are light enough to load and haul with little effort. They handle well in tight places like mowing around trees or handleing in and out of stalls. And the HP on paper is not much different from the super C and H. But the H sure feels like it has a lot more ummmmmph to it.If it is big work you have go with the big tractor. The C might be a little light with a load in the front end loader. I guess what I am trying to say is "buy the red one". My 2 cents

I had a Super C with a loader some years ago and liked it, but, it you did have to be keep in mind that you were sitting on a light tractor and be careful with it. I think, based on your description of your needs, I would go for the H too. The $600 would go a long way toward putting hydraulics on the H, and you would have a stronger, heavier tractor when complete.

Gary I would bank on the H at that price. You can put a loader on a C, but the H will handle it a tad better. H drawbar HP is around 25. I think the C is about 5 less.

I had a C 11 years ao and was constantly banging my knees getting off and on the tractor.

Thanks Red

I'm leaning that way too.

Even thought the H doesn't have hydraulics that wouldn't be hard to add. Either a PTO pump or drive a pump off the belt pulley.

Also, do you know if the belly pump from an M will fit the H. I have an extra belly pump.

Here is another alternative. Complete hydraulic unit with valve, reservoir, and pump in one package. If you are comtemplating a loader however, you would be much better off with live power. Think Super series.

Wardner, Who made that unit? We had one on the PTO of a BN to operate a loader when I was a kid. I hadn't seen one since. Are they still available anywhere?

That is not my tractor but I think the ID tag said "HyPowerUnit". Could be a brand name for Cessna, Barnes, Prince, Charlyn or any of a number of mfg's. I usually see a couple, mostly rear PTO mounted, at large auctions. I bet they are still available new. Print the photo and take it to your local tractor dealer.

Isn't that a Charlynn unit. We had one like it on our Oliver 70 when we put a loader on it.

I think they are still are available.

I am afraid not. They don't even look similar if you have them standing next to each other.
