I HAVE A 1950 MODEL M THAT I JUST OVERHAULED AND I HAVE ONLY RAN IT FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES AT IDLE SPEED AND HALF THROTTLE. I HONED THE CYLINDER CHECKED ALL MAIN BEARING CLEARANCES AND EVERYTHING WAS ALRIGHT. MY QUESTION IS THAT WHEN I START IT I GET A PUFF OF SMOKE THEN IT CLEARS UP. I HAD MY VALVES CHECKED THEY WERE FINE,AND I INSTALLED THE RINGS SO NONE IF THE GAPS WERE CLOSE TOGETHER. WILL THIS CLEAR UP AS I RUN THE TRACTOR MORE. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BREAK THIS TRACTOR IN . IM GETTING READY TO PUT A MAIN SEAL IN IT AND HAVE THE STEERING OUT OF IT SO I CANT TAKE IT TO THE FIELD THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME. BRIAN

Ditto on what Bill said. The valve guides last about as long as the rings before they get worn and allow oil to drip down.

These tractors need to be broke in under load. The rings will never seat in at an idle or no load. Also the more you run it at no load the worse it will get. The cylinders will become glazed from the oil and may never seat.Be patient and wait untill the tractor is done and take it out and pull at least an 8' tandem disc for about four hours or run it on a dyno at a local tractor dealer at 30 horse power for about one hour

I would bet you a dollar your valve guides are wore and letting oil drip down while it is shut off. This is a common problem on older engines that have not had them replaced. Once the oil is burnt up upon initial startup then it is fine until it sits again. My 2 cents. Bill {Antique Acres}
