Farmall H's are a fairly simple tractor to work on but....CHECK THE MANIFOLD...for cracks and breaks in the metal ,most are 50 years old..a new one can run around $200. Next make sure the rear rims are in good shape and not rusted through around the valve stem, or where they have sat. 3rd and 4th gear are likely the working gears that have done the most. If you can drive it check them , listen and feel any vibration. I think a tractor should be complete, all lights ,fenders , belt pulley and sheet metal is in place, I expect to replace seals ,bearings, to paint, I even expect to pull a head and get valves done. If you are mechanically inclined an engine job is possible ...guess it depends, I've been lucky and bought 2 H's and both run well without doing any engine work. The clutch will likely need adjusting ..if she barks bring her home!!!!! !!!! They're tough and dependable old tractors, but like any machine that age, there will be worn spots. Run the usual checks such as looking for leaks, compression test on the engine, and making sure it works in all gears. Try the brakes to see if they work, but if they don't, it's not generally an outrageous expense.
Play in the steering is to be expected, but if there is a lot, or if the front wheels wobble when moving in 5th gear, you may have to replace the end-of-the-shaft ball bearing in the steering box on the top of the front bolster. Another spot to check is the universal joint in the steering shaft. If oil is leaking down the front bolster shaft, you'll likely have to replace the bushings. Look in the radiator to see if there is evidence of oil, or white crystals that indicate a recent attempt at sealing the cooling system.
Check the ammeter to see if the generator is charging when above half-throttle. If the lights work, it may not charge much with them on.
The clutch should engage smoothly, and don't be surprised if there is some side-to-side play in the pedal, though this tends to be worse on the bigger tractors, such as an M.
Look at the rear axles to see if the wheel hubs have been kept tight. Worn keyways are an indication of loose hubs.
The hydraulic system is probably the "belly pump" or lift-all system. Look for leaks. Pull the lever at idling speed to see the engine shows signs of a load being applied.
Other than all that, just look for signs of abuse and neglect, like a badly bent drawbar, sheet metal caved in, etc. The Farmall H is generally very rugged and dependable. Parts are easy to find, and the tractor is easy to work on.
