They're tough and dependable old tractors, but like any machine that age, there will be worn spots. Run the usual checks such as looking for leaks, compression test on the engine, and making sure it works in all gears. Try the brakes to see if they work, but if they don't, it's not generally an outrageous expense. Play in the steering is to be expected, but if there is a lot, or if the front wheels wobble when moving in 5th gear, you may have to replace the end-of-the-shaft ball bearing in the steering box on the top of the front bolster. Another spot to check is the universal joint in the steering shaft. If oil is leaking down the front bolster shaft, you'll likely have to replace the bushings. Look in the radiator to see if there is evidence of oil, or white crystals that indicate a recent attempt at sealing the cooling system. Check the ammeter to see if the generator is charging when above half-throttle. If the lights work, it may not charge much with them on. The clutch should engage smoothly, and don't be surprised if there is some side-to-side play in the pedal, though this tends to be worse on the bigger tractors, such as an M. Look at the rear axles to see if the wheel hubs have been kept tight. Worn keyways are an indication of loose hubs. The hydraulic system is probably the "belly pump" or lift-all system. Look for leaks. Pull the lever at idling speed to see the engine shows signs of a load being applied. Other than all that, just look for signs of abuse and neglect, like a badly bent drawbar, sheet metal caved in, etc. The Farmall H is generally very rugged and dependable. Parts are easy to find, and the tractor is easy to work on.
