Thanks to the help on this board, I rebuilt my Super A steering gearbox and my steering is like new! My sector shaft and sector gear were worn. I took them to a machine shop, they removed the gear from the shaft and used a large press to centerpunch many places all around the shaft where the gear rides. They then pressed the gear back on the shaft - it had to be pressed with a huge industrial type press it was so tight after the centerpunching they did! They then drilled holes in two places through the gear AND into the shaft about 1/8". We put square head set screws in these holes (which we got VERY tight) and used red Loctite on them. Upon reassembly, I cut the heads off the set screws so they would not hit the three bolts that hold the bearing retainer in the upper part of the gearbox housing. The steering is very tight and positive now. Thanks felllows.

Feels even better to see my wife's grandfather (the 86 year old owner of the tractor) smile so big with joy. He has lots of equipment and will use it to plant and cultivate. He has used a JD model 40 for years and has always wanted a Farmall. He is so excited!!!
