I have an International B275 diesel tractor that is very hard to start from cold. I have to nearly run the battery down before it will start and then it omits a lot of smoke. Once the tractor is warmed up, it starts OK. I have replaced a couple of the glowplugs and I think they are working but I have no way of being sure. Any help would be appreciated. Allan

Try not to run down the battery. Your really straining the starter when you crank it when its cold. Check out the glow plugs to see how they are working. If they are wired in series have just one bad one is enough to have none of them work. I hate to say it but Id rather give my diesel the slightest wiff of starting fluid than to just crank and crank on the starter. My 4500 Ford gets just a little to get the first bang off. Remember your trying to turn over lots of cold parts and fluids, its a wonder they start at all.

Use your multi-meter and check resisitance on the glow plugs. Pull them to do this. This is the easiest test to check if they are good or not...

What should the resitence be if they are good? Low?

Hi allan, golw pugs draw about 17amps each so a total amp draw of 70amps means there all working and anything less some are not.

Pay attention to the color of the smoke upon start up. White smoke is bad compression, blue bad rings and valves, black great but injector pump needs timing before it tears something up.

Look for a leak in the fuel system, oil with dirt, that would let the fuel drain when the tractor is shut off. The leak can be in the high or low prseeure system.

make sure you have power to the glow plugs and let them warm up for a couple of minuits before you try to start it. wouldn't hurt to pull the injectors and look at their condition and while they are out do a compression check.good luck

This is the best advice thus far. With age injectors tend to wear and do not spray out a fine mist as is needed. Even if the glow plugs are good the cylinder temperature has to be warm enough to ignite. To do this you heat it longer. Also get stronger battery.
