I have a 706 with a 310 , Very good tractor , lots of power . Bought it with antifrezze in the oil , rebuilt it for about $1000 in parts , did the work myself , no metric bolts on mine , if you get a chance to own one you`ll love it

Still in use and well thought of, only thing I have heard is if it ever does have to be rebuilt its more expensive than most. Treat it well and it will wear out the rest of the tractor.

Does this mean METRIC bolts like JDs imported tractors from Germany?

I don't know about the Metric question, so much of what I work on has metric I think nothing of it. The one that gets me is the 8M size thats like 5/16, they are real close even in thread count. The 8Ms are used on the hood on 50 series and its real easy to forget and use the wrong bolt.

The neuss engines were used a lot in Aust D-310 706,696,686,786,766 Dt-358 866,886 ,DT -358 Turbo-charged 976,986 D-358 was also used in ACCO trucks&1420,711,725 harvesters.
easy starting, resonable life & cheap to overhaul.
Changing coolant regulary also helped with longetivity

Robert:
Was the Australian 686 the same tractor we had in North America. The American 686 had a Melrose Park D312 engine in 1976 to 1978 production and a D310 Neuss engine in 1979 -1980 production. The 686 we had was basically a slightly updated 656 and 666(had the 5 speed gearbox with the old Super M-TA type Torque Amplifier). Note that a very few 1976-1977 models had a C291 gas engine.

Second question. What was the 696 ? Did it have a 656-686 type chassis or did it use the larger 706-766 type chassis ?

Third question. Did the Australian 866 and 976 use the same chassis as the American 766-966 tractors

Finally I have an advertizing sales brochure for the Australian 86 Series B tractors(dated 1981). They look identical to the American 1981 model 86 series tractors. The only differences I could see is the use of Cat 3 three point hitch for all models(good idea) and the 986 having the DT358 engine(instead of the D436). Also the Australian 786 used the D310 whereas the American 786 used the D358. How long did the Australian Series B remain in production after 1981. The American 86 series production ended in July 1981 and the 30 and 50 series were produced afterwards.

It sure is interesting looking at all the different tractors models that emanated from the original 706-806

686 didnt have a T/A, 696 had the T/A, Both had D-310, 766 had the D-310 with more HP. 866 & 766,696,686 same chassis, 976 used the larger axles from the 1066/1466
1066/86 & above were full imports, had a U in the serial num.smaller models were built in geelong, victoria ,They have A in the serial num

will have to check a book here when the 86 went out we bought our 886 series B in 82 but I think 84 rings a bell, 5000 series released in 1982 5088,5288,5488 Snoopy,s were released in 1980 3388,3588

I think the last petrol powered tractors sold by IH under here was the AW6, Cost of fuel was a lot higher,
Hope I have answered all of your questions, feel free to ask
