Neighbor of mine just replaced the crank bearings in his cub a '63' I think. Anyway he was concerned about the throw out bearing, it was not turning. Took it to the IH dealer new one did not move either, whats the deal. Why is there a grease fitting if it is not suposed to rotate when engaging the fingers? Thanks

The throw out bearing is a carbon bearing and does not rotate. The fingers of the clutch pressure plate ride on the face of the carbon . The grease fitting is there so that you can lube the bearing material. The carbone absorbs the grease. Only give the bearing a couple shots of grease a few times a year. Any more questions , just yell. John

the grease fitting is to grease the slide. Forward and back.the bearing is carbon.

Not true Rob. The grease fitting is in the metal retainer that holds the carbon bearing. There is a weep hole opposite the fitting for excess grease to squeeze out. There is no path for grease to get onto the spline ( or slide as you call it ) . And besides you don't want to grease the spline as graese holds dirt and grit and carbon dust which will gum up the works.John

Any Cub I have evertaken apart Has a throw out bearing, a splined shaft , and linkage. The throw out bearing is fixed to the collar that it is in . There are no other parts. I checked two parts books and both confirm this. The only path for the grease pumped into the bearing via the grease fitting is into the cavity around the carbon and out the weep hole. Sorry, but we are either miscommunicating or you have a setup I've never seen and which doesn't appear in any parts books I have. If you have a parts book post to part number for the collat the bearing rides on. John

if you hsave ever torn down a cub youd know that the shaft that goes back to the tranny doesnt touch the throw out bearing, theefore no need to lube it!
