I am having trouble getting spark to my H. I replaced the dist. cap, rotor, coil, and plugs today. I also got a set of points and condenser but when I pulled the cap off there is a platis cover type thing between the rotor and where I suspect the points are. How does this come off? Also, what is the best way to test for spark?

Thanks in advance for the great advice I am sure to get.

I got it running! Their was some sort of resistor between the alternator and the coil that had burned out, as I was getting power all the way up to that. My H is a '49 and was 6 volt but the last owner had put an alternator and 12 volt battery in. It still has a 6 volt coil and starter, is this why the resistor was needed?

If your H still has the magneto this may help you, Under your rotor button is a solid metal plate that comes off with 2 screws. Your points and condenser will be under this plate. Just for the sake for not getting things out of time I always put the number 1 cylinder at top dead center compression stroke. The electrode on your rotor button should be pointing toward number 1 plug wire position on your distributor cap. There is a small gear right under your rotor. Be sure to put it back in the exact position you take it from after you have changed your points and condenser. I believe the gap for your points is .025. You can usually move the cam far enough to get your clearance. Good Luck Ed

Check your ignition switch. See if you have electricity from your battery to the ignition switch. It should run from there to your coil. If it doesn't you will not get spark to the points. one way is turn on the ignition and take a test light, ground it. Check the terminal going to the coil, if it lights you have power to the coil. next check the side going from the coil to the distributor. If you have power to there you should have spark unless the points are not set right and the spark plug gap is not right. Good luck. B.

The plastic cover lifts out, nothing holds it down other than maybe being a little stuck if its been there a while. Points and condensor are under it. Check the wires and connections while you're at it.
