I got it running! There was some sort of resistor between the alternator and the coil that had burned out, as I was getting power all the way up to that. I temporarily bypassed it to make sure that was the problem and she fired right off. My H is a '49 and was 6 volt but the last owner had put an alternator and 12 volt battery in. It still has a 6 volt coil and starter, is this why the resistor was needed? Where might I find a replacement?

Great feeling to get the engine running isn't it? The ballast resistor keeps the points from burning up. Starter is okay with 12 volts. You could get a coil with an internal resistor, but if you already have a new coil then an external resistor will work fine anywhere in the ignition circuit between the battery and distributor. Don't try to run the starter current through it.

Congratulations there Brent! Yes you still need the resistor. NAPA part 13ICR. It is a ceramic cased device that is about 2 1/2 inches long. I mount it up where the oil line bolts to the upper steering post base near the gauges. Don't tighten the bolt to tight or you will break the ceramic. BTDT!!!!

Thanks Red! My old one was mounted between the coil and block using one of the coil bolt holes. Is this a good location, or could that have been a contibuting factor in its sudden demise?

I usually get 10 years out of one. I like it up on that steering bracket so it is not exposed to the weather.
