My Farmall 560 is serial # 46308, a late 1961 model according to my book. Was this model factory fitted with the "improved" rear end components or would it have needed retrofitting by a dealer like the first models did?

Brent:

Yours has all the updates from the factory and they are one strong rear end. You have nothing to worry about. I have seen these rear ends survive for years with a turbo on the tractor and pulling 4 furrow 14 inch bottom plow in clay. The proof is with the tractor pullers. They are a favorite with them since they stand up to the abuse. It still doesn't hurt when you have the brakes off for disk replacement to check the bull pinion bearings for any radial looseness. If they are loose change the bull pinion bearings. They along with the axle bearings were the chief causes of the failures with the early 460's, 560's, and 660's

I would be more worried about a Tidal Wave than the differential on a 560. I live in S. Dak.

I've been following this for the last year and a half, as a owner of a F460 and fan of this whole series. The people that had the failiers loaded twice to much weight and to much plow and then expected the tractor to last in 1st or 2nd gear, they abused the machine then blamed IH. I'm sure some failed in normal service but not many. It also seems IH overreacted to the proablem, they should have offered a instant loaner for broken tractors instead of a circus of repair sites. Would have saved money and reputation. Mostly they just need the better bearings and some instruction to the farmer. my 2 cents

Do not worry about the rear end on a 560. I had two 560's for many years (earlier production numbers) and never had a problem with them. They are as well made as any tractor.

The new updated reared was started at S/N 23926 and up.
All in all the M through 560 rearends are in the best shape of all the tractors we take apart in the salvage yard.

My guess would be it has the new stuff in it already, and anyhow, If it's lasted 40 yrs already it should a few more anyhow....Let Me guess....Your reading Ken Updike's book on the "Number Series, 1955 to 1985..... Great interesting book isn't it.

Just had the top cover off on my 560 (serial # 2756). Everything looked alright on it. I don't think it ever had the update put into it because it is an earlier tractor, and doesn't have the triangle on the serial # plate designating an upadate. It's lasted this many years and over 13,000 hours so I figured why change it now when it's lasted this long, and looks alright.
