I replaced the burnt out voltage resistor with the NAPA part Red posted for me earlier. My test light showed bright light coming from the switch, and it was dimmer on the other side of the resistor where it goes to the coil. I hit the switch and it wouldn't start, although it fired right off when I had bypassed the resistor before putting the new one on. I left the switch on and tested with the test light, same results as before, then I noticed a wisp of smoke coming from the backside of the new part. Is there an "in" and "out" post on these things that I may have reversed? It appeared to be right. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 43 H that was almost impossible to start with a battrey. It turns the motor over to fast or something and does not allow it to catch. I finally just went to starting it with the hand cranck all the time. Good luck

just for grins I would have the starter checked to see what it is drawing amp wise. if it is drawing to much it will take power away from your ignition sys. that could explain why it started when you released the started and not while you were cranking it.

I was thinking the same thing. I had the starter rebuilt at a local shop this fall when it conked out during the last cutting of hay (perfect timing, I was in the middle of raking). I think I will check that out.

Hi again! When I started the tractor without the resistor, I didn't let it run for more than 20 seconds or so, so when I tried with 1/2 the voltage going to the coil after installing the resitor it must have just been too weak. It is a brand new 6V coil I got from Mike's Tractor. I plugged the old girl in over night and it started this morning after 15 seconds of cranking, but not till I let off the starter switch. I was going to stop for a second as not to overheat the starter but when I let off it fired right up. Wierd or not? I let it warm up for 5 minutes, shut it off, and then it popped right off when I started it again. Anyway, at least she is running again as we have a blizzard watch out for Thursday and if the 560 goes down I'll still have a back-up snow mover.

Brent are you sure that is a 6 volt coil? It almost sounds like you have a 12 volt coil with an internal resistor. The NAPA resistor in that configuration would drop the voltage too low for the points.

Brent - There's no "in" and "out" on the resistor - it'll work fine hooked up either way. The wisp of smoke you got when you left the switch on is normal too. There's a coil of resistance wire inside the ceramic housing that gets VERY hot when the ignition's on an the motor's stopped. The smoke was simply oil or some other contamination burning off the resistance wire.

Puzzling why the tractor won't start now - your test light test results are correct. Have you tried pulling a spark plug and checking for spark there? You could have a good spark but have flooded the motor.
