As a follow-up to the answers I received thank you very much. If it is the valves recessed into the head does anyone know about how much it would cost to have the heads re-worked? I could remove the heads from the tractor myself (they can be removed without splitting the tractor right?)
I was just curious if anyone knows what the going rate approxiamately is? They sure are a great tractor.

Brent. Be careful,this stuff is heavy. Mabe you can rent an engine hoist or some type of crane to lift the head off. Took engine and clutch unit out of a 300 with my old loader but rented and engine hoist to put it back. It was well worth it plus I had some good help. Not the wife.

I'm going off of my experience with dad's 806 diesel, but they are all about the same. It's way to much fun taking the head off of those old binders. Someone in their infinate wisdom at IH decided to put the fuel tank over the engine. Notice that? Ya, makes things interesting. If they would have used head bolts instead of head STUDS, it'd be ok. Problem is, you can't get the head up over the studs with the fuel tank in place. Our 656 was split for an out of frame, our 1066 was split for an out of frame, the 806 diesel was done by lifting the entire pedistal holding the fuel tank. Lots of work, but a bit easier than a split. Unless you think your clutch needs replaced. It's not a job for the average amature, especailly with a diesel. If you are comfortable and have experience, time, tools, etc. then it's something that can be done. Better have the litle woman or friend help with the head, it gets pretty heavy.

Pull the fuel tank it help o drain it frist, there are head bolts no studs on that engine, as far as cost well that dependes on weather you have to install all the valve seats and replace the valves and guides and springs. Igot a thousand bucks in a 361 806 head it needed everything . While you have the head off look for a ridge in the cylinder wall if is a big step then you need new sleves and pistons. Make sure that the machine shop know how to set the valve higth i have see some poor workmanship and some realy screwed up jobs so go armed with the spec. because they are dumb and most do not have the books to get the spec.
