Can someone tell me how I can know for sure if my head gasket is blown. I have a Farmall Super C. Thanks! Bob

Thank you gentelmen! I believe that we are on the right track. It is acting better since I retorqued the head. A friend came over with his cylinder pressure checker and the cylinders pressure checked equal between all cylinders. The only problem is the plugs keep fouling. Thanks again. Bob

Hi bob, Look for foam or bubbles in the top of the radaitor, excessive pressure building, black floaters in the water and over heating, milkey oil. Try retourqing the head gasket. You can use sodium silicate(egg whites) to temporary solve the problem. Use about 1/4 of a pint and pour in radaitor while engine is running, too much and it'll plug up the cooling system and you'll have to flush with fresh water to remove it, use less with anti-freeze and sometimes you have to drain the anti-freeze. Takes about 1/2hr to react and plug the holes.
Most pharmacy's carry it, why I don't know.

Bob,when you did your engine did you get the head planed? It isn't an expensive proposition and 5\1000th is the tolerant level, after that it needs planing. I did my son's Jeep and when i took the head into the machine shop it was warped 20\1000ths, A gasket won't solve the problem if it's warped any. Farmall43,Bob and Joe in VA are all on target when it comes to deciding on blown gasket. From trial and error(did I tell you I had to take the head off and get it done after I had assembled the engine?), you don't know how upsetting it is to see prestone running out the tailpipe!!!..anyway you might need to consider planing the head..just a thought from Mike soldan in Exeter Ontario..good luck!

Thanks Mike, and yes when I had the head off it was ground for flatness. I retorqued it and it seems to be much better, but the plugs keep fouling. Thanks again this forum is the great, and I am learning a lot. Bob

What is it doing that makes you think it has a blown head gasket? The easiest way to tell is to ckeck your oil and see if there is anti-freeze in it.

Well I just finished up restoring my tractor.I just wanted to run it a little and the linkage between the governor and the carburetor fell off. The engine raced a few seconds before I could shut it down. Then afterwards it leaked oil out between the two inside cylinders. I did retorque it and the leak stoped, but also I did find some water in the oil when I changed it. Thanks for your help. Bob

Once I had the governor linkage off on my tractor and when I put it back (I thought correctly) my engine took off too.It wasn't recently rebuilt though and did not hurt anything.Pull the valve cover and look for milky residue inside.See if your antifreeze level has dropped, and change the oil, then run the tractor some more to see if there is any antifreeze in there.I had a diesel suburban that had a blown head gasket...ran it for 20,000 miles that way.It would lose water but it didn't get into the oil.Hope it turns out in your favor.
