I purchased a Farmall diesel 350 some time back and it has used more oil than it should.I've only used it 5-6 hours and it used about a quart. The tractor sat 2-3 years and wasn't used before I bought it. I'm wondering if the rings will re-seat after its used some or does this sound as if I need an overhaul.

Big Al, what weight oil and when was the oil last changed? Also, what is the operating temp of the engine after 3 or 4 hours running?

The weight of the oil was 10 w 30w and was changed just before I bought it. I put new oil in it today--15w 40w. I have never ran the tractor more than 15 minutes at one time.I will be plowing with it as soon as the ground dries. Thanks for the reply and what do you think.

Contrary to most, I would take the multiviscosity oil out and put in 30 wt. I neglected to ask about the oil pressure but I assume it is adequate. I would work the tractor and periodically check the oil level, always maintaining the level and monitoring the oil pressure particularly when good and hot. Once you have run the machine in such a manner you will have a better idea on how the oil consumption will be. Using a quart in 5 or 6 hours of plowing remains acceptable to me in an older tractor. Good luck.
