My new '51 has a tear-drop rear light, minus lens. The red bulb is intact, the clear bulb is broken. The right headlight is missing and the left one is the the flat-can type for selaed beam, not the tear-drop type. Which is the correct one for a '51? I kinda like the look of the tear-drop. I know a guy who has a Super A and a Cub, each of which has both types of headlights. Don't know why he hasn't paired them up on the tractors, but I can probably get one flat-can from him or a pair of tear-drops. Any suggestions?

THE LIGHTS ON MY PRE-50 LOOK IDENTICAL TO THOSE PICTURED, WHEN I CONVERTED MINE TO 12 VOLT I REMOVED THEM AND REPLACED WITH LARGER LIGHTS. BUT AS I RECALL THEY HAD A SMALL 6 VOLT BULB IN THEM LOOKING MUCH LIKE TODAYS 1156 BULBS.
HOPE THIS HELPS

This is the light set up on my '50:

Notice the origin white wire ties in this photo: LOL

Parts manual doesn't help much and the "Originality Guide" said that IH had the sealed beam headlights in the early '50's. That's about all I know. (Aint much)

Checkd the serial number again and find I have a 1953 Super A, if that makes any difference about the lights.

'53 instead of '51 would make a difference in the decals. Up to August 16, 1951 had the wavy "Super A" Cultivision decal (1001188R1) and after that was the solid white background "Super A" decal (1001474R1). "Super" was written in a curve above the "A".

This is the decal up to '51:

Don't have a pic of the other.

My original '53 has the same rear light as you describe. The front are not exactly teardrop shape. Originaly they had a 6V sealed beam lamp with a nipple protruding through a hole in the rear to connect the wires to. This bulb type is expensive. The IH dealer had a somewhat flatter 6V sealed beam by GE that has screw terminals on the back. The wires go in the rear housing hole and connect to the bulb. They mount with the original rubber ring. A pretty good near original solution I thought.

I believe the correct lights for your tractor are the teardrop lights. I think the sealed beams came later. You can buy a bulb at any automotive supply that will fit the teardrop (either 6 or 12 volts. The bulb will be round instead of the flat top bulb like the original. I have a couple of 6 v original bulbs if you are interested.
