My F20N has some odd front wheels. The center section is held with 8 bolts, and the rim is attached with 5 lugs and nuts. I wonder if this is correct for a 1938 F20N. It has the iron wheels with demountable rims on rear. I am getting ready to clean this up and paint it, and dont want to waste time on these wheels if they are wrong.

Dear Bill: I'm not sure, but it looks like a
jerryrigged conversion to rubber tires. Whoever
had this tractor could have cut off the steel wheels, and welded in rims. Are they 15" or 16"?
If they are 15", my guess is that this is a
homemade job, not factory, because the F&H round spoke rims are all 16". I'm writing to you since I've run into a similar situation with my
F30, which I'm currently restoring.

Its hard to see in the picture, but the wheel is a steel wheel that is dish shaped, like a dog dish, with a taper where the rim goes on. The rim goes on toward the taper, and the lugs hold it tight. In fact so tight, one won't come off. They are 16 inch, and the wheels have not been drilled to fit the tractor, they fit like they were made for it. The rims are not tractor rims, they are car rims with the centers removed. If I can get the stuck rim off, I may get 2 rims and use the wheels as they are. No use getting too worked up about original, since the rear rims do not match either. It takes a close look to see the difference, but it is obvious once it is noticed.

I would guess they are an aftermarket wheel. There were a lot of companies that made wheels to retrofit steel wheeled tractors. In fact, most of the wheels from the factory were made by other companies for IH. The common round spoke wheels were made by French & Hecht. If they look factory made and not cobbled together you may consider leaving them on. It would be no different than any of the M&W add on options that were put on many tractors. If you must have it as it left the factory, then they are probably not correct.

If you have a non-adjustable front rim for a H or M and the clips that hold them on, I think that they will fit

Wheel looks right, but not the right rim.

Bill, can you get a casting or part number off the wheel or rim. I have about 2/3 different pneumatic rims & wheels that will fit on the front of a F20 listed in the parts manuel. Problem being they only show a few so I have very limited pictures to match up

The wheels and rims are stamped steel, so no casting numbers. In fact the rims appear to be car rims with the centers removed, as I can see rivet holes on the rim that came off the wheel.
In this picture, one wheel/rim assembly is off the tractor, and one rim is off, but the wheel is still bolted to the hub.

Looks like the hub is right I think, but the wheel looks like it's off some old 3/4 ton truck. With holes cut or drilled to fit. My thoughts anyway jeff
