Just curious about why there are so many people afraid of multi weights and detergent oils in their older tractors. I am of the school of thought that oil has come a long way and the newer technology oil does a much better job. As for detergent oil, I want the inside of my engines as clean as possible. There seem to be an old wives tale of staying with non-detergent to keep the sludge in the engine for fear it will start to use oil if you dont. In most (notice, I say most, not all) cases that will not be the case. I always have a 55 gal drum of 15-W-40 diesel engine oil around for my trucks and I use it in everything I own, right down to my Cub Cadet. There are always tractors of all ages coming and going and I have never had a problem. I am always looking to learn new things, so I would like to here the other side of this coin. I read on this very forum...."The only place for non-detergent oil is in an oil can" and have adopted that quote for my own. Thanks

I've always been concerned about detergent oil after years of nondetergent because I thought it could break loose junk that could plug oil passages. Are you saying that shouldn't be a problem?

Never has been for me....when you think about it, there is a screen on the bottom of the oil pump and that should catch anything large enough plug an oil galley. And, if it did make it through the screen, and if the oil pump didnt grind it up, it would go thru the filter before making to the oil galleys.

Use 30 wt oil. Probably already had detergent oil in it so detergent oil probably ok. You can verify by pulling the valve cover to see if everything is clean. I would not recommend a multiviscosity oil in an M, or any of these old gasoline tractors.

I'd be carefull about using any oil with a detergent. If you know your engine is clean inside then you're OK with a detergent oil. However if your tractor has been run for years with a non detergent oil it could have a sludge build up that could create a problem when you start using a detergent oil. I'm not sure what would be a good way to clean the engine if has a build up.

You can clean out the build up by draining the oil and filling the crankcase with a 50/50 or 75/25 kerosene/oil blend and running it for a while, then draining it and filling it with fresh oil. I had a chevy dealer do this to an old citation I owned and it ran hard for 50,000 miles after it had been originally declared dead.

If you work it most of the time use a straight 30 wt.
If you just drive it in parads 10w30 should be ok.
I would not use 10w40 at all.

It seems more and more tractor mfg's are recommending 15w40 on the new rigs. The old ones will certainly run great on the new oils too....Dave
