The steering on my Farmall 706 gas is not working. The steering wheel turns but does not turn the front wheels. Once in a while it will actually work. I think that the brakes and TA are affected too. I have never had any problems before like this. I did replace the PTO clutch disks last fall. Some of the plates were worn down enough that the PTO was slipping. I did drain the oil from the transmission to pull the PTO out. I put all of the oil back. I did not and have not ever changed the hydraulic filter down on the lower right side of the transmission case since I have owned the tractor. Is there a possibility that the PTO clutch plates filled the filter up? Will a restricted filter cause these problems? Like I said ... it works at times and then it won't work. I have pulled the filter out and will replace when I purchase a new one. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. The PTO works fine after I installed a set of clutches. Where is the hydraulic valve you guys are talking about? Is there a test to see if it is working OK? Any help is appreciated.

Tractor vet is right. Check the pto first, if it doesn't work, it is either the splines in the pressure plate or the pto input shaft, or both. If it does, the problem is in the mcv or mcv pump. Our 856 was acting like that and I installed new gaskets and seals in the mcv(multiple control valve) and replaced the pump. The pump operates the TA, the power steering, and the power brakes. It works great now. We could get around the problem temporarily by removing a plug on the mcv with a 5/8 wrench and briefly running the tractor until oil came out. Then we'd put the plug back in. I guess the pump was loosing it's prime after it sat overnight. This was ok for a while, but it was a big waste of oil. I hope this is some help. Good luck.

See if the PTO is still working ,if it is not then you need to split the tractor at the bellhouseing and install a new pressure plate and PTO drive . If the pto does work then you have a problem in the MCV system.
