Hi Guys
My 1945 H will sometime sputter when under load and the only way to keep from stalling is to very quickly get the govenor back to the idle position.
This can be inconvient when hauling two cord of wood up a hill. Does this sound like a govenor problem or a carb problem?
tks Bill

I had a similar problem with my M. I got rid of the sediment bowl completely, put a new cut off valve(I used a 3/8 ball valve), and put a clear Fram inline fuel filter between the valve and carb(got it at Wal-Mart for about 3 bucks). Now it runs better under a load, than without.

Hi Red
When she starts to sputter, the engine is making an sputtering/missing noise. The rpms will start to decrease very quicky. If I do do engage the clutch and bring the govenor to the idle position, the ole girl will completly stall.
last year I had the cover off to look at the govenor,it seem to have some wear at the time and not having a manual,I was reluctant to go further.

I am expecting a service manual from Binder books in the mail.
From the replys I am getting I am leaning towards a carb problem.
tks guys
Keep the tips coming.

At first glance, it sounds as if the fuel mixture is leaning out. If that is the case, start by opening the main jet out 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Another possibilty would be manifold or carb gasket leaking. Float could be set too low also. I have also seen the time that one cylinder would not fire under load due to a wire or plug that was not quite up to par. I had a Super M with that problem once and must have spent 2 weeks off and on looking for the trouble. I had just put new plugs and wires on it so I immediately went for the fuel system. After much frustration, I finally pulled the plugs out and put another new set in.....problem solved. Then used process of elimination to find the bad one.

I would first tune in the carb fuel mixture settings. Then do a timing check if the carb is not the problem. Might want to pull a gas line coming into the carb and check for good gas flow and clean out the carb. I don't think the governor is the issue.

Sounds like you may have something blocking the fuel flow. Maybe crud in the gas tank?

Bill can you further explain "sputtering"? This could be a fuel, iginition or governor problem or a combination of problems.

Clean out the sediment bulb, check for anything that may restrict gas flow coming from the tank, replace plugs, their inexpensive, check points and replace if needed along with the condensor.
does this occur when gas tank is low, if so gas sloshing in tank might deposit rust,or whatever into the opening above the sediment bulb. i had this problem, i rebuilt carb, didn't need to. i dont think governor is problem.Let me Know.
