300U hydraulics, loader doesn't raise

Finally got my new (to me) 300U started and was checking the hydraulics. 3-pt works fine, loader bucket tips fine, loader won't raise and lower. Hoses are all fine, no kinks. Question is: where do I check hydraulic fluid level and what does it take? And would low fluid level cause this? Just seems odd that only the big loader cylinders are not working, but others are. Have no manuals for it yet, as I just got the thing, haven't even got it home yet. Manuals are first thing on my list. Appreciate any help.

The plug to check the hyd is the square plug under the seat, it has a dipstick (or at least used to) attached. Used regular hyd fluid. If you get it too full, it'll come out the breather (also under the seat) when you let the loader down, etc. This may sound dumb, but something that I've experienced on my 350 utility is that the aluminum handles on the hyd control valves get worn & don't actually turn the shaft on the valve anymore. I took mine off & put in set screws. At any rate, if the hitch & the other remote work, I'd suspect something about the valve. Good luck!

Thanks. Hadn't thought about the lever being a problem. I'll check it out, and ask the previous owner if he had any problems along those lines. He kind of messed up the loader arms when it rolled down a hill and hit a rock with the loader bucket, so I am prepared to find just about any kind of problem with it.

I would watch the hoses attached to your loader lift cylinders while actuating the lift valve up and down. Even if the loader does not lift, you should see these hoses move a little as pressure builds and is relieved inside of them. If they do not do this, then hydraulic pressure is not making its way to the hoses. This information could help you to narrow down the source of the problem.

Fred,
I own a 300U and have the original owners manual for it. I can fax you a copy of the page that talks about the fluid check area if you would like. I needed to check the level of hyd fluid once and I think it was the big(about 1 1/2"dia.) plug under the seat. I think the hyd fluid should be about 1 to 1 1/2" from the top. Let me know if you want a fax. Just give me your name and a fax number. Steve LaCrosse
