M and B questions

I have the live hyd. pump out of my M on the workbench. I need to open it to take the gears out. How do I keep the shaft still so I can turn the nut on the end off?

Also, I have to put a rebuilt mag for our spare B. How do I time the engine correctly? Are there marks on the crank pulley like an M?

I assume you are working on the belly pump, if not disregard this. Place of piece of steel in the pump inlet and allow the gears to jam against it, then you can use a hammer and brass drift to get the nut/coupler off, it has standard right hand thread . Clean the threads good and it will go together easily. Just did this on my M. Also think about an I&T service manual. Same book covers both tractors, and more. Good luck. Doc

No, I mean the hyd. pump between the dist and the timing gears. I want to gut the pump for pulling.

the timing marks for the B are on the flywheel but you cant put the mag in on no1 fire as is is on the spring loaded impulse take out no 2 plug then turn it over a little after compression then before no1 is on compression you can put the mag in and line up the timing mark on the flywheel the the rotor should be lined up on no1 the cap is marked for no1 wire to double check turn motor with crank over one rev and double check for no pos to fire ther is no way to advance or retard the mags
