Ever since I have put the 3 pt. hitch on my H I have noticed that when very heavy loads on it, ever time I hit the smallest bump with the front of the tractor is makes a loud Bang! noise. It doesnt do this when no load but only when quit heavy of loads. Like if you hit a small bump the front wheels will come off the ground just ever so slightly and it will make a loud bang. I can understand the front wheels coming off the ground bc of the load but I dont understand the loud bang; I dont think the front of the tractor coming off the ground just ever so slightly would make that loud of a sound when it hits down. It kind've looks like it makes the noise when the front comes off the ground and not when it hits. Anybody have any ideas? This might just be the way it is and if it is than it is fine but I just wanted to make sure Im not tearing something up in the frontend of the tractor. Thanks in advance!!

Before repairing an "H" we had been pulling some tree stumps out and experienced same. Removed the lower bolster and dropped the pivot shaft. Found the thrust bearing had bad wear and allowed the pivot shaft to move up against the cavity in the upper bolster, rounding it out. Consequently, the boss on bottom of upper bolster cut a depression ring into the top side of the pivot shaft plate. I'd look after it afore it causes real damage to the upper bolster casting!

Add a little weight to the front, and you'll likely not hear the sound. There is a big thrust bearing in that front bolster assembly that probably has enough play in it to make the noise you're hearing. If you ever replace it, don't be surprised if there's a series of "dents" in the race where the ball bearings have been pounding it. I've seen them that way from the abuse of driving row-crop front ends across furrows too fast when plowing, and from long-term abuse with a loader.

I have found the same thing. I found if I slow down, it doesn't do it. Speed makes it hop. Irv

But if the play is between the wheels and the frame wouldn't it be better to put the weight on the frame to hold it down on the wheels?

William, I think you are correct if that is where the looseness is occuring. We had an M with a rear loader and it came with a weight box that bolted onto the front end. The box was mounted to the side rails and that kept the front end on the ground. Either that or tear that front apart....

I have found that those bolsters have a some vertical play in them. It is probably the big bolster steering gear wacking the bottom of the housing it is in.
