I just got a 460 gas with a Oliver loader and the hydraulic pump runs longer than it should. After I lower the loader for example you can hear the pump still running. It is choking out the tractor. Could the aux. remote hyd. lines be crossed? I had it in 1 st gear going up a hill and had to give it full throttle so it wouldn't die. My manuals haven't come in yet. I hooked up the 3 bottom fasthitch plow I got with it and it leaks off and the plow digs into the ground, I have to keep pulling the lever to keep it up. I am a Case man myself and this is my first Farmall. Thanks for the help.

There is an orifice in your regulator valve that will get plugged with foreign material and act like this. It is in the regulator and safety valve block right in front of the shifter and under the valves themselves. If your engine is pulling down and you move your Hydra-Touch valve one way, the motor winds up a little while the hitch is moving and then pulls down and stays down when the hitch stops, there is a good chance this orifice is plugged. This orifice has a tubular screen built onto one end. The trouble is, if a piece of grit gets through the screen and plugs the orifice and you blow it out, it will be trapped in the screen and will plug the orifice again. If that is the problem it is best to replace the orifice, about $30. Also check the adjustment of the linkage between the cylinder and the Hydra-Touch valve. There are some gears in the back of the Hydra-Touch valve and I have seen the roll pins that secure them shear and the pump will remain on high pressure. Operating the tractor in this high pressure condition will cause very high temperatures and further damage.

I'm not sure if it's true on the 460, but some IH tractors' hydraulic valves are designed to latch in the up or down position, and then are supposed to unlatch when the cylinder reaches the end of its travel. If the hydraulic system has problems (not putting out as high pressure as it's supposed to), the valves don't unlatch. It may be that's what's happening to you?? Are your hydraulic valve handles in the middle (unlatched and inactive) position when you're having this problem?

Get your books, this can be a real hair-puller.

Ain't it wunnerful how a book can sometimes make a guy near as smart as somebody who knows something. Don't really want to get into the hair-pulling business - haven't got that much left.

Your theory regarding the clogged orifice makes sense to me (and my books), assuming the problem isn't just a control valve latched open.

the sound you are hearing is not the oumo running too long because the pump runs all the time. Your problem sounds like it is in the hydraulic valves. Not a huge problem to fix. Parts are readily available thru your freindly IH dealer.
