I spent Easter Sunday afternoon teaching my 12 year-old how to disk with the "H". He worked up 5 acres of chiseled cornground so I could drill in the oats/alfalfa with the 560. He has really been watching "his" field come up in the last few days. It's too bad every kid can't grow up in the country driving a Farmall and watching the earth produce what others only see in the supermarket! The sight of him out on the "H" brought back lots of memories of Grandpa teaching me on his H 25 years ago.

Wonderful! I started at age 7 raking hay with a neighbor's Farmall B while Dad ran the hay chopper with the H. He'd get two loads chopped, then we'd pull them to the barn with two tractors, and use the H to run the blower to put the hay in the barn. Get a drink of water, and back to the field. I thought I was something special to be included that way.

By the next summer, I ran the H in the cornfields with 2-row cultivators, while Dad followed me with the B and cultivators. He was always just behind me, so I knew I had to pay attention.

By the end of that summer, he bought an M, and we farmed with the H and M together until I was in high school. Then we worked with the M and SM. A few times before Dad retired, my son (then in junior high) got to work in the field with us using the H. That was even more special. I've still got all three tractors.

Great to hear you're spending time with your son on the tractor. My dad had me raking hay at 7 yrs old.I will never forget those days spent with my dad and all the education I got while having fun. Too bad all kids don't have the same opportunity. As for the H,I wish I knew where it is today.

Not only that, but he'll learn what oil is for and the machine never gets started without checking the oil. There is a ton of life's lessons to be learned by handing over some of that responsiblity to young person. I started out mowing on my Grandpa's Cub when I was eight, moved up to Dad's 9N, was raking hay at eleven on Dad's H, and was doing all the discing and harrowing on Dad's (my) JD60 at 13. Priceless experience. Your son is indeed lucky to have you as a father.

I can still remember cutting my teeth on my Grandpa's 1941 H when I was 10. The next year he let me cut oats out in the field east of the Farmhouse with the H and an old AC sickle bar mower. I would get about one round done and something would break on the mower.

The only quality thing that Grandpa ever bought was the Farmall H. About everything else he had was junk at best.
