I have just bought a real nice Farmall Model "C", and my buddy bought a Farmall Model "A".

We found these tractors in Western Maryland. The man sold them to us for $350.00 each.
Neither one of them are stuck, the man said that they both were running when he placed them in the shed about 4 years ago.

Neither one of them has a battery installed.
They should require a 6 volt battery, I believe.
I need to make sure of the proper terminal connection for these units.

I am not sure if they require a negative or positive ground.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are going to register our tractors on this site, after we find out the specs about them year made and so fourth.

We took pictures of these tractors as we found them, and are going to keep a scrapbook of pictures and text about them.

They have now been given a early retirement, and will be restored for farm shows, parades, etc.

We will probaby be back for more advice (and without a doubt will need it), everybody seems to be so helpful on this site towards others.

I think that we really got a good deal.
Both are in very good condition, all metal is straight without dents, very little if any rust, motors will turn, tires on both units are in super good condition, both are are totaly complete.

I think that we will have these units running again by Friday, or at least we hope to.

Thanks The Big Boys With Little Toys

To Farmall Paul, He did have 2 Johnny Poppers also. 1 was a Model "A" and the other was a Model "B". Both were equipped with the tricycle type front end. The "A" was in pettry rough shape, the engine was stuck, a lot of rust, the tin was bent up, he sold it for $350.00. The "B" was in really good shape and in running condition, and he wanted $700.00 for it.
My brother wanted it, but I made the mistake of telling someone about it. They went to his farm, took a look at it and offered him a $1,000.00 for it. So you gussed it he sold it with out a question. All did not work out too bad though. The guy that bought the John Deere "B" did tell the farmer my name, and the farmer called me and said that he had something that I may want for the Farmall "C" that I had purchased from him. He told me to bring a pickup or small trailer to his place to pick it up. I went to his place today and he GAVE me the set of original cultivators that he bought with the Farmall "C", and they are complete and ready to be repainted and mounted back onto the tractor. Everything except the Deere "A" had been kept in his equipment sheds. He thanked me for telling the other guy about his other tractor. I told him that my brother was really upset with me. He told me to follow him to another shed. When he opened the door there sat a Farmall "M" in very good shape. He told me to contact my brother and that he would sell it to him for $1,500.00. My brother bought the tractor sight unseen, and it runs like a sewing machine. I offered to pay for the cultivators. But he would not take any money, he asked that I mount them on the "C" when I restore it.
He said that his son has somehow taken his farm away from him, and he would be dammed if his son was going to get the tractors with it. I really feel sorry for this old guy, he has sold almost everything he has worked for all his life. Just to keep his son from getting anything.

Glenn's advice is all correct assuming the original 6V pos ground system is still in use. Commonly these tractors are converted to 12V negative ground. To tell, look for the presence of an alternator or a generator. An alternator looks like what's in your car, about 6" in diameter and about 6" long. A generator is smaller in diameter and longer.

Yup, I made the assumption. :-) BTW, someone could also have had the generator reworked to make 12v, and no one would be the wiser w/o testing it.

Those tractors were originally 6 volts with positive ground system. Of course someone could have changed them over to 12 volts. You should be able to tell that by looking at the generator. If they have an alternator, they are 12 volt and have been changed to negative ground. You got a real deal on those tractors if the engines are not stuck. A little clean up, change the oil and get the electrical, points, plugs, etc in good shape and I bet they will start right up.
