I've got a 10 x 38 rim which is rusted out by the valve stem (not unusual, I understand). I want to remove the tire, cut out the weak metal and weld a plate in place from the inside and then drill a new hole for a valve stem. Is this a realistic repair? Has anyone done this type of repair. Several of the farmers in my area say it can be done. I haven't been able to find a used rim and can't afford a new one.

Bama,
Are you sure you have 10 inch rims? My H has 11" rims and most M's I've seen have 12".

My observation is that most H's have 10 inch rims and most M's have 11 inch rims. I believe the Super Ms mostly have 12 inch rims.

B RED,you don,t have to put the valve stem back in the same spot,go to another part of the rim that is in good shape if possible and drill a new hole, and repair the old callcium eaten area.

I had the same problem with my C. I don't do welding, but took the rim to the shop that does my welding. They trimmed up at the hole back to sound metal and welded in a new piece of metal and then drilled a new hole for the valve stem. I think they charged me $15. You also need to clean off all the rust scale from the inside of the rims and paint them. I found that an air hammer with a blunt chisel on it works great for that. You just can't get that heavy scale off with a wire brush. After that use a wire wheel on an angle grinder. Be sure to wear your safety equipment. Eye protection, hearing protection and heavy gloves.

Yes saw it. Couple of comments there. If the MD was running good, that was a good price. Good price for that Cub too.

Sorry bout that! I hadn't hit the refresh button in a while. Wish I had remembered that show in Gray - got a bad case of CRS (can't remember shutt) - must be my advancin' age an' general decrepitude. Onliest thing I got was a 7' pull-type sickle bar mower and a slip clutch for my M. Got the mower for only $150.00 - its a New Idea and is in real good shape.

I like that mower! Especially the price. Is it a belt drive or dos it have a pitman? I bought a 3 pt hitch New Holland about a month ago for a lot more than that. Not too crazy about a pull type, but for that price I could have made it work.

Haas - It has a pitman - in fact a brand new one which was made for it just before the sale. Everything about the mower gives the notion that it was well taken care of: there's grease in all the zerks, no missing teeth, good sharpening job on the blade, etc. I think I got a real steal. Sorry bout the bad pics, but the pics were taken early Monday morning before there was good light cause I had to head back to Huntsville for the work week. I'll be back at the farm for the weekend.

I took a rim for my super C to the local welding shop and they did a beautiful job of welding a small plate with a drilled hole to the rim. From the outside you couldn't tell it was repaired after it was painted. Now these guys are good and that makes a big difference.

I have a friend who has done it before. You just need to have a good welder so its a quality job when finished.
