I worked till 10 pm last night and out early this morning on the wiring of my H.I had to take the wood splitter up the road and figured it would be a good run for the tractor.
When I arrived I turned off the ignition switch and she kept running.A minor wiring mistake,No problem,I unhooked the battery,She kept running!
Being tired and working after dark,I had wired the alt directly to the ignition.I had to turn off the gas and wait.
Thanks for the proper info Bob!
I will rewire tomorrow.

Bill - Sounds like the alternator is back-feeding the ignition coil from the #1 terminal when you turn off the ign switch. Putting a warning lamp, 10 to 40 ohm resistor, a 1 amp 50 PRV diode, or a 2nd switch in the line between the #1 terminal and the ignition switch should solve the problem.

Congrats! Sounds like your charging! A quick way to shut down any engine is to cut off the air supply - just put your hand over the air cleaner intake, another option would be to simply pull out the choke!

just yank the coil wire off real quick, kills it instantly.

It doesn't shock you at all, we did it this way every since 1990 on our 400 when new wiring was put on and the key wouldn't shut it off. It is now working tho.

i've always been fond of lowering the throttle, setting the brakes, and attempting to start out in 5th gear, myself. heck, you don't even have to get out of the seat.
