I'm helping a friend get a Farmall 140 running. Someone has put in a 12 volt battery. Isn't this a 6 volt system? All the other electrical components like the starter, generator, etc. look like the originals so I don't think it's been converted to 12 volt if in fact it is a 6 volt system. Were these originally 6 volt?

Thanks, BHT

Bus Driver is right, depending on the year, you could have 6V, 12V with generator or 12V with Alternator. What is your serial number?

The serial number is 5247. Does this help?

The early 140s may have been 6 volt. Don' know for sure. However, I know for sure that later ones were 12 volt. You will have to look at your components (voltage regulator, coil, generator) to determine if it was originally 12 volts.

My data on the 140 is far away at the moment, so can speak only in generalities. Early 140 was 6 volts with generator. Next electrical change was to 12 volt with generator. Then changed to 12 volt with alternator.
