Super H steering questions

My '53 narrow front Super H exhibits the classic front wheel wobble while running in 5th gear. Yesterday I pulled the cover off the steering gear box for a peek inside. I found the worm and sector gear to be in good shape - gearbox even still had some oil in it. But I also found at least 1/16" of radial play at the top (sector gear end) of the upper bolster pivot shaft. I suspect this is the cause of the shimmy and that it's time to replace the bushing and seal.

My questions:

1 - Should I replace both bolster bushings (top and bottom) while I have it apart? The bottom bushing seems to have no play, but with the weight of the assembled parts it's hard to tell. (The tractor still steers easy which tells me the thrust bearing is probably OK.)

2 - Any tips for driving the old bushings and seals out and getting the replacements back in?

Any advice is appreciated! ...Bob M

The single most important thing to do is to block the tractor so it CANNOT roll, shift, slide, twitch, or respond to your work in any way other than holding still! Put it in gear, set both brakes, and don't take any chances! The front of these things is heavy!

The work itself is pretty straighforward. Plan on replacing that little ball bearing on the front end of the steering shaft while you're in there, and you'll find a thrust bearing under the big sector gear that may have some dimples in it, especially if that tractor has spent time with a loader on it.

Changed them on my M a couple of weeks ago, I took the old bushings out with an air chisel, cleaned everything up and pressed the new ones in with a press that I made from the archives on this forum. I don't remeber who's idea, but it was a good one. Took me about 1/2 a day to do.
