Time fer my ignorance to show thru again - I'm takin a rear rim of'n my M - do I have to remove the nuts completely or just loosen 'em up enough to rotate the clamps 90 degrees. If I just rotate the clamps, will that free up the rim? Thanks in advance fer any assistance.

Thanks Mike & Haas! I should be back at the farm on the 18th o' May - I'll take a closer look then.. I do think y'all are right cause I could see somethin' behind the clamps when I looked this past weekend.

Take the clamps all the way off. I can't recall for sure but I believe the bolts have a second nut behind like Michael said. Even it that is not there, the bolts are likely rusted in so tight they won't come out anyway. While you have the rim off, might as well take the bolts and clamps all the way off and clean things up and replace any bolts that are corroded badly. It'll take some penetrant to get the bolts out. I take a nut and screw halfway on the end of the bolt and then screw another bolt in that nut. Then you can use a heavy hammer to persuade the bolt to come out of the hole it is rusted into.

Bama, I was looking at the clamps on my M the other day and I think they are double nutted, in otherwords, take off the outside wheel nut and remove the wheel clamp, the inside clamp is still nutted to the wheel by a second nut which also holds the inside part of the clamp. Remove all the outside clamps and your rim should slide off of the wheel, leaving the inside half of the clamp still in place for reinstalling..I hope that sounds clear.
