Purchased a wide front Super M with year unknown since engine was replaced and tag missing. Has a magneto instead of coil. The operator's manual gives service information on both, but the magneto seems a lot more tricky especially keeping it oiled. Question is: Why were both magneto and coil offered at same time and can the magneto be changed over to coil? Thanks in advance.

My personal preferance is to keep the magneto, they are relatively rare nowdays and most people who don't like them is because they don't understand the workings.

Keep the magneto, like everyone says. If you run out of battery, or the charging system quits you can just park on top of battery hill and let 'er roll! Or crank if you're strong and brave.

I would keep the magneto unless it isn't working. The mag on my '41 B is still going strong despite years of neglect. Oiling is a small issue, a couple drops of oil when you are servicing the rest of the tractor.

If the magneto is working good. Keep it. Like Charlie says, you can replace it with a battery ignition. I have even seen magnetos that had been converted to battery ignition by adding a coil. With the magneto you need no battery. If the battery is dead, just pull it off and you are on your way.

But if the mag is working, I find them to be more reliable than distributors. Also, since they don't take external power, your tractor will run even if you have a dead battery. That is a real plus in some instances.

A magneto can give years of service with no maintenance. A distributor system will go through multiple sets of points in the same time.

You mention about distributors going through more points than a magneto - I've noticed that too. Any idea why? I've gotten to where I automatically put a set of points and condenser in my H and M every year because due to experience, I know that if I don't somewhere during the summer when I need the tractor the most it will quit due to points. I've run my F14 with the F4 magneto a number of years with at least as many hours as my H or M and it still has the same points and condenser.

I believe that the current through the points with the magneto is considerably less than the current when the ignition is from the battery. Have never attempted to measure the current for the points on the magneto. Doesn't seem to be worth the effort.

I don't know why both were offered at the same time unless you could still buy the tractor without a electrical system. It is no problem to replace the mag with a distributor if it makes you happy.
