I have a 1938 F-20. the diferential noise is very loud especially in high gear. i took it apart today and found that the ring gear and pinion gear both have significant wear and there are cast iron filings in the bottom of the case. is this a common ailment on these tractors or will i have good luck getting the parts i need from another tractor? this tractor was run for an undetermined amount of time with very little lube in transmission.

I don't tink this is a normal problem, except in the case of no lube. Our 38 had a lot of hours on it over the years, and we had the dif. apart last year to fix a leaky gasket. The gears looked just fine, so I think you should be able to find a good set without much problem. We broke a bearing cap putting it back together, and had to get one,but I can't remember where we got it. Puat a notice in want ads hear and on the ATIS site and you will get a response or two. Ber careful putting the caps back on the bearings and get the pegs lined up! We found out the hard way!
