Hey guys..I know this probably should go on the Garden Tractor Board, but those guys never answer any questions.

Does anybody have any knowledge of the Cub Cadet 882 with the Kubota Deisel engine? I am looking at one, but the owner says the engine is bad (don't know if it is rebuildable or not).

If the engine is shot, anybody know of a gas replacement? The deisel is Kubota made and cost 3 times what a re-built engine for an H costs.

The guy wants $500 for it with a bad engine...hardly worth putting a new $3000 engine in when I can get a good Cub Cadet 122 or 1200 for $500.

Any and all help is appreciated...BB

BB,
I was told that a 782D in decent shape and less than 1000hrs on it is worth 2500 to $3000.
So I'd want to know exactly what's "busted" before I'd walk away from a $500 machine. Kevin

As I understand it, the tractor has at least 2 problems...first, evidently it was dropped off a truck...not enough to break anything but ibent a few things....not sure what exactly.

Second, it set up for 7-8 years. It had a blown head gasket that was replaced, but it still had low compression (150 psi). Now he says the injector pumps are locked up.

I'm no diesel mechanic, so I really don't know how hard those things will be to fix.

You give me an idea though...I know of a 782 with a running Kohler that needs some work. I can get each for $500 each and put the deck from the 882 on the 782 and either fix or part the 882...What do you guys think???

I'd go with the Kohler-equipped 782. The fact that is runs is a big plus in my book. I believe that the 782 was 18hp or 20hp, so you should be in good shape. The price is right, too. :-)

782 was a KT-17 17HP Kohler. There's 2 series of KT-17 Kohler's too. Series 1 was mostly a splash lubricated engine. Most of them have died now. Most of the Series II engines had a spin-on oil filter which means they have a pressure lube system and are a good engine. The filter WAS an Option. Best to check the spec number on the engine serial number tag. There are several other engines that can be putr into the 782 without much work using OEM parts.

Denny...it is a series 1 Kohler...that is one reason I didn't jump on it (plus it does not have a deck). If it was a series 2, I would probably get it and put the desk from the 882 under it.
