Click Means Bad Solenoid or Starter?

I bought a well-used IH 300 Utility last winter. A couple times in cold weather I went to start it and it would just "click" but not turn. Since I was only using it once a month or so, I just assumed it was the battery -- so I hooked up the battery charger and that took care of it.

On a later occassion, when it just "clicked" and I turned the key a couple of times (maybe I turned the key a little harder!), much to my surprise, it cranked.

Now, after having no "clicking" problem for months, it started fine in the afternoon but just "clicks" the same evening. After hours of battery charging, still just "clicks." The fairly loud "click" is coming from the solenoid switch which, at least on mine, is mounted on the right side of the cowl (below the throttle control) remote from the starter.

Does this sound like I just need to replace the solenoid or does the fact that its "clicking" mean the problem is more likely in the starter itself?

Is there some "fits-all-12volt-solenoid" that will work on this machine? Who sells it?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Bob

If you want to try a solenoid go to your local discount auto parts store. Get one for a late 70's to early 80's Ford truck for about 8 bucks and give it a shot. I think the # where I work part time(Advance Auto Parts) is SS75. Clean the connections good and it should work.

I think it's most likely the solenoid, but it could also be a bad spot on the starter's commutator. Solenoids are a lot easier and cheaper to fix so I would do like Donwisc suggests and try that first. The fact that it's clicking means it's working, but there's a contact inside that may be burned, preventing sufficient current flow to turn the starter. This is also a good chance to make sure all your connections, including grounds, are clean and tight.

Have checked the battery cables and terminals. On some IHC grounding can be problem ,you might have to change our ground . One easy way to check this is with good set of jumper cables ,hook the ground up then poistive up with cables. Check the ground stud or bolt making sure you have good surface for ground .Paint and rust or even the bolt can cause a problem. Battery cables can cause you the same problem ,thats why I, use the jumper cables .

If you determine it is a bad solinoid , dont be afraid to open it up and inspect the contacts which will be burnt and you can usually clean them up or rotate the contact 180 deg and pick up a new surface . Youve got nothing to lose and theres no beter feeling than when you can fix something without having to buy parts. Good luck Don

In reply to your starter clicking problem. I have a 1958 IH 240 utility it is a 6 volt system. My problem was that it would crank very slow not even fast enough to start sometimes. I thought the solenoid was not letting enough fire to the starter so I replaced it, didn't help, then had the starter rebuilt still no change. The battery was a 650 cranking amps and it just wasn't enough, I needed one with at least 800 crnk amps couldn't find one so ended up converting it to 12 volts now there is no problem starting just touch the starter and it's running. So since yours is a 12 volt system it could be both solenoid and starter. Hope this helps you out. Rocky

Turn on the head lights and hit the starter. If the lights go out completely it is a bad battery terminal connection. It they dim it is usually a bad starter (or locked engine). It nothing dims then it is either a bad solenoid or open starter.

Sounds like the battery to me. Try adding water, but most likely its time to replace it. Charger can't help a dead one, but you should be able to jump it. Cranking after a few key turns is possible, the battery has a little more juice as it warms up from the flow of electricity.
