Tonight I bought an Oliver model 82 sickle bar mower in pretty decent shape (it needs a few odds and ends) for a whopping $25,do I need an overrunning clutch to run this with my H (for safety) or are they only needed on bush hog type mowers? Thanks in advance,Bill C.

The previous posts are absolutely right, you won't need it for your mower. But if you asked that question your probably like me, you grew up with a live pto tractor. If you cut it, sooner or later you'll probably want to rake it and bale it. Get the over run now and you want have to worry about it later.Best of luck with your new mower.

With a sickle mower, you don't need an overrunning clutch. Not enough inertia in the sickle to matter.

I have never had to run an overrunning clutch with a sickle bar mower as you don't get that much momentum built up there. With a brush hog with heady blades swinging the inertia forces are greater and that is why you need the overrunning clutch.
