I have a few painting questions as I prepare my Super H for some badly needed paint.

First..I am either sandblasting or using a wire wheel to get old paint and rust off.

In the event I miss some rust, I was thinking of spraying with a rust inhibitor.

Questions...

1. Is there a primer that turns rust to an inert material AND fills in minor pits AND is compatible with either IH red paint or a primer that is compatible with IH paint.

2. Is there another primer / paint combination that will work to inhibit rust, fill in pits, and is compatible with a good quality Farmall red color paint?

3. Is any of the above solutions available in spray cans for painting small parts as I pull them off, sand blast them, and eventually put them back on before the final top coat over the whole tractor?

4. Any other suggestions?

My goal if to have a reasonably good looking machine that will last another 50 years. It will be stored inside unless the barn brns down.

Thanks guys!! BB

Thanks for the info guys. I value everyone's opinions on this and I think I am pointed in the right direction. As I proceed, I'll keep you posted on my results. I love tinkering, but painting is pretty intimidating.

I would definitly treat the metal with something, it's not worth getting rust in a couple years. If you want the paint to last 50 years you need to use urethane automotive paints, they won't cost much more for a small tractor and they will have all the different primers you will need to fill the pits. Below is a link to the best painting forum on the net, you can find an answer to any question there.

Bama,
Here's some things I've learned:
As far as using the spray can IH red, I was using it but could not get a smooth glossy surface with it . It started out glossy and looking good but the nest day it had a rather course finish. It took several coats to get a marginally acceptable gloss. And I'm not that picky, my tractor isn't a show tractor. I started using the gallons of IH red 2150 paint and spray it with a touch up spray gun for the small parts. The touch up gun holds about a cup of paint.
Also I tried to use the spray can paint to touch up an area I sprayed the day befor and it made the surface wrinkle up where ever I sprayed it.
So I've said adios to the HI red spray cans.

Here are the steps I used on an H, LoBoy, B, and a 9N:
1 Sandblast or wire brush, and sand with 220.
2 Clean with acetone.
3 Spray with Extend rust converter.
4 Fill pits with spray Kilz brand primer/surfacer.
5 Sand out with 220.
What's left would be the pits filled and bare metal.
6 Prime with PPG epoxy primer (red of course).
7 Scuff with a scotchbrite pad.
8 Paint. Use acrylic urethane from PPG.

I have used Permatex rust converter ,in spray cans , on the last three tractors I have painted. I guess time will tell how effective it is. I dont see a whole lot of diffreance in etching and non etching primer other than cost With the rust converter the primer seems to go on smoother There is no substitute for sanding and filling to get rid of pits I do not like to sand blast anything that will be damaged from sand and cannot be removed from the chassis Wire brushing paint remover and feather edging still seems the way to go to me Hope this helps rather than confusing you more

I have the same questions. I have heard that things that are "primered only" will begin to rust after a while even though they are stored inside. Sure could use answers to all these questions.
Bama, Thanks for asking these questions. We will now get advice from the experts. I read the post's almost daily but seldom post anything.

I only know a little about what we're talking about...
Stuff will rust under primer because most primer is porus, that is water can get through it.
There are waterproof primers but the paint doesn't tend to stick as well to it.
Some primers will fill small pits (etching?), there are some in rattle cans.
All primer and paint will, by definition inhibit rust. You could also use POR15 under the primer.
POR=Paint over rust. I've never used it but I've heard good things.
If you're sandblasting you won't need it though.

I have used both por15 and pematex Extend. With sand blasting and wire brushing and paint stripper
I tend to like the Extend as I am usually doing small sections at a time and its easy to work with. It has held up very well on some work I have done and my tractors don't yet have a barn.
