I just bought what I thought was a 1947 Farmall H. Now that I have looked it over, I believe it to be a 1944 model. The serial number plate on the left hand side is gone. The number on the front right on the engine is FMH-170309. Were the tractor serial number and the engine serial numbers the same? The operators manual makes me wonder. Any info would be appreciated!

On a Farmall H the chassis and engine numbers match. This is not true of all IH tractors. My H is #171375,pretty close to yours. The casting dates should end with the letter N,confirmg that the rest of the tractor is the same as the engine.

Thanks! I'll check the casting dates (once I uncover them). In the number, the second zero looks kinda like a Q. Any chance they could have done an overstrike? All I can figure is it must be a zero but it does look slightly different than the first one in the number.

It is interesting that our tractors are so close in number...I wish there was a way to track down their history by serial number. I had an antique Colt SAA six shooter that I had a serial trace done on. It told me where it was originally shipped to and sold the first time.

I am certain that the 2nd 0 is a 0. Our tractors were probably made about 2 weeks to 1 month apart. It was shipped to New England. I would be interested in knowing what your casting codes are, just to compare them. You can email me direct if you want to.

Swamp:

I finally found them after much searching. They are as follows:

6-17-N
6-21-N
5-26-N

The book says that they were done in DD-MM-Y format but these would indicate a MM-DD-Y format. Ever heard of that before on a 1944?
