Story of an H

I have spent the whole day today with the H I bought at auction two weeks ago. Unfortunately, it was not on it but trying to start it. I have been jumping it off of my truck's 12 volt battery, the starter turns and turns with no sign of starting. I have totally cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the very leaky sediment bowl and removed the nasty 'gas' that was in the tank. The best I have gotten is a shotgun like pop out of the manifold, which I also replaced because I suspected the old one was leaky since it was so badly corroded. I am at a loss. It has a magneto ignition and the spark looks strong. One thing I think is highly related to the problem. Even after lots of cranking, the plugs are dry and barely smell like gas. The throttle butterfly is wide open and I have tightened everything on the carb to try and eliminate air leaks. I seek the wisdom of the Farmall board to help me get her to roar tomorrow (no muffler yet). The last time I saw her run was the day I bought her. Thanks! -BTD

You stated you replaced the sediment bowl and drained the gas tank - is it possible you could have got a piece of crud in the fuel line? Have you tried to disconnect the line at both ends and blow air through it? Just a thought, let us know when you figure it out - fireman

Have you checked to see if you are getting gas through the carb. pull the drain plug, see if the carb. is full. Sometimes the float, or float valve will stick. If you don't have gas running out the drain plug tap the side of the carb, most of the time that will get the gas flowing. Just a thought hope it helps jeffw

How is the compression on your H? Are the valves adjusted correctly?

I assume they are okay. When I use the hand crank there is plenty of 'breathing' sounds coming out of the manifold. So far it is an excellent air pump, I may have to borrow my father in laws compression tool. -BTD

Have you adjusted the magneto timing? To adjust it you swival the magneto on its bracket.

Like you said the tractor was running two weeks ago so you would have to believe that the compression is good.

And that the timing is close if not correct. Sounds like a stuck needle or float valve in the carb.
