H backfiring theory

After all the work on the magneto, carb, and manifold on my H I finally got her to run. (I had to jb-weld a previously unseen freeze break on the bottom of the carb. She now starts after some hefty cranking and runs a bit rough. After a minute or two of running, she starts to backfire and as the backfiring gets worse, she runs worse until stalling. Now, I think what is happening is that my timing is still 180 out. So my theory goes that only two cylinders are really firing, the other two are just getting gas but missing the spark. After enough gas gets in the two missing cylinders, they start providing the unburnt fuel for the backfires, which disrupt the other two cylinders, and they start messing up until the whole kit and caboodle stalls. She will restart without much cranking. Am I close or way off base? -BTD

BTD,heres an easy way to know if you have your timing right. When #1 is at top dead centre ,the valves on #4 should be floating open , so turn you engine over until you see both intake and exhaust move at about the same time and at that point #1 is TDC. ( The valves on #4 will move almost simultaneously ,but not quite at the same time. Then set up your wiring and distributor from there. Good Luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Very well could be. I did that on a VW engine and helped a neighbor straighten out a Ford Pinto engine. Note where #1 wire is right now, then of course 3, 4, and 2. Wire the #1 wire where the #4 wire is currently plugged into the distributor cap. Then follow with 3, 4, and 2.
